Episode 1:

Super Mario World

00:00 / 01:04

Welcome to 'Remember the Game?'!! I've wanted to launch a retro gaming podcast for a long time, and finally decided to get my ass in gear and do it. And to get motivated, we're going to get the ball rolling with my favourite video game of all-time; Super Mario World.

Platformers are my favourite gaming genre, which I'm sure is a result of playing Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Bros 3 on my NES so much as a kid. I'm 35 years old, and I honestly can't remember a time in my life before Mario. I've always adored his games. I watched his cartoon (and his movie, but that's a topic for another day). Mario 3 was my jam! Until the SNES came along...

Super Mario World blew my mind. The colours were so bright and gorgeous. The map was huge. There were so many secret paths and exits to levels, the game seemed to go on forever! I remember kids at school telling me about a blue Yoshi that could fly, and I didn't believe them. Remember the Secret Area above the first Ghost House? A kid near my house showed me how to get it, and I felt like he had just told me the meaning of life. This game took over my life.

And almost 30 years later, I'm still not sick of it. I buy it every time Nintendo releases it, and it's the primary reason I want to see Nintendo add SNES games to the Switch's online service. I want to be able to play it anywhere. This game is my ultimate "video game comfort food", and I love that it's one of the few games my girlfriend sit down and play through once a year or so.

At the end of every episode of this show, my guest and I award the game we're talking about a score out of 10. As a spoiler, Super Mario World gets a perfect 10, and I promise never to give out another one. My pal Chris joins me for the debut episode of 'Remember the Game'.

We should have called it "Remember the Masterpiece".
