With Super Smash Bros. Ultimate releasing this week, we figured it a perfect time to sit back and remember one of the greatest fighting/party games ever made; Super Smash Bros. Melee! My pal Mark McCue returns to the show this week, and we had a great time blabbing about not only Melee, but the Smash Bros series as a whole.

 

While the Smash Bros series obviously began on the Nintendo 64, Melee was it's true coming out party. I never played the 64 version, but Melee stole so many hours of me and my friends' lives. With it's (at the time) expanded roster of fighters, beautiful graphics, and spot on controls, Melee was the perfect fighting game. I remember going to my friend Rob's place with my buddies, and just playing tournament after tournament. We each had our go-to fighter, and we'd lose ourselves in that game for hours at a time. 

 

And don't forget that controller! I've always loved the Gamecube controller's unique layout. It has what might be the most satisfying triggers of any controller ever, and it was small enough to just squeeze into your hands. Particularly following the monstrosity that was the N64's "controller". The Gamecube's set up was so perfect that Nintendo released adapters and Gamecube style controllers for both the Wii U and the Switch, specifically for people to play Smash Bros with!

 

Super Smash Bros. Melee has such an insane following that almost 20 years after it's release, there are still professional Melee players and tournaments all over the world. New Smash games have been released for the Wii, Wii U, 3DS and Switch, and Melee still has an incredibly loyal and active community. It catapulted the Smash Bros. series to the top of Nintendo's depth chart, and it's legacy and staying power have solidified it as one of the most iconic titles in gaming history.
