Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles IV:
Turtles In Time
It's funny how gamers can agree that they love a franchise, but will argue for hours about the best game in it's library. Super Mario Bros 3 or Super Mario World? Ocarina of Time or Link to the Past? Mario Party 2 or 3?
If there's one franchise that has a definitive "best video game", it's undoubtably the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and TMNT IV: Turtles in Time for the SNES.
I think it's frustrating that there aren't more good Ninja Turtles video games. The formula is as simple as it gets; pick a Turtle and beat up bad guys. But companies continue to find ways to fuck it up. Hell, they re-released this game years ago and found a way to ruin it!! But forget that. Forget all the TMNT games made after this one. Turtles In Time is the perfect beat 'em up.
I relayed this game shortly before Christopher and I recorded this episode, and it's still as fun to play now as it was 25 years ago. The graphics are gorgeous, it looks like you're playing an episode of the cartoon. The Turtles' animations are smooth and fluid, and each individual turtle has a unique feel, instead of just switching headbands and mashing buttons. The gameplay can be challenging, and the time travel aspect makes for some really fun and creative level designs. Bebop, Rocksteady, Baxter Stockman, Slash, Krang, Shredder; it's a love letter to Turtle fans.
You don't need me to say anything else. If you played this, you know how dope it is. The three games missing from the SNES Classic that get brought up the most are Chrono Trigger, Act Raiser, and Turtles in Time. That's some pretty prestigious company.
